Ugandan troops told to stay alert as Mpox cases rise

Kampala|On Monday, the Ministry of Health reported an increase in Mpox cases, revealing that at least 156 new cases had been recorded in the previous five days.

The total cases now stand at 1,571 since the first case was reported six months ago.

Dr Col Henry Kyobe, national incident manager in charge of Ebola, Cholera, and Mpox emergencies, said on Monday that the number of cases in Kampala continues to rise.

He stated that sex workers and boda bodas are the primary causes of Mpox in Kampala.

In an effort to control the surge, Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force personnel have been urged to remain vigilant and follow preventive measures.

Col Dr Kyobe, speaking during a briefing at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO TC) in Singo, Nakaseke district, emphasized the gravity of the situation.

“Mpox is a serious public health threat that spreads through contact. We need to adhere to precautions.”

He described the primary symptoms of Mpox, which include fever, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, a sore throat, and distinctive skin lesions.

Dr. Kyobe revealed that Uganda has recorded 12 Mpox-related deaths.
