Parliament to honor fmr. Koboko woman MP Baba Diri

Parliament will honor the late [former] Koboko district woman MP Margaret Baba Diri, who died on January 9.

Diri served as a legislator for 25 years before losing to Dr Sharifa Aate in the 2021 elections.

She died on her way to a medical facility in Kampala’s Kawempe Division.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa paid tribute to Diri in a speech to family members and mourners at the deceased’s home in Tula, Kawempe on Saturday evening.

“Having served the Legislature for 25 years, Hon. Baba Diri nurtured many members and played a critical role in fighting for the rights of disabled people,” he said.

Tayebwa stated that Parliament will hold a special session to honor her dedicated service to the nation following consultations with the executive and family.

Baba Diri taught at St. Charles Lwanga School in Koboko from 1976 to 1990 before entering politics.

She worked as a gender development officer for the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda from 1992 to 1996.

Diri died at the age of 70.

On the day she was pronounced dead, Uganda and Parliament also lost Muhammad Ssegirinya, who until his death, was representing Kawempe North.
