Lira City security makes substantial arrests ahead of Christmas

In Lira City West Division, an intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of 34 people, the majority of whom were young.

Areas of Kamshwali, Cuk Te-Atat, Te-Dam, and Te-Kulu Ojwina were the focus of the operation, which was carried out by divisional security on December 10, 2024.

Security says those who were arrested are suspected of terrorizing locals.

In a statement, North Kyoga Region Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, stated that the above areas are “known crime hotspots” identified during the Police Community Policing program, which was conducted in various locations throughout Lira City West Division.

“The suspects are alleged to be part of criminal gangs involved in smoking opium, sniffing aviation oil, consuming alcohol, and robbing civilians of items such as phones, wallets, handbags, and other belongings,” he explained.

The Owuwuk gang is popular in Lira City and throughout Lango. When they meet you in the middle of the night, they steal everything valuable you own and leave you to your fate.

“They are also suspected of engaging in housebreaking and theft. Among the arrested suspects are 9 females and 25 males, all currently in police custody,” added Okema.

In the same statement issued on Wednesday, he stated that police officers are recording their statements, and their case files will be compiled and submitted to the Resident City State Attorney for review and legal advice on the charges.

SP Okema added that the police value the strong collaboration with community members in sharing security information.

“This shows their commitment to fighting crime in their communities, as per Article 17 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which highlights the duties of a citizen.”

On December 1, 2023; 43 gangsters, assumed to be of the Owuwuk cluster were arrested across Lira City.
