Agago |Private Ameny Bonny has been sentenced to death for killing civilians in Paimol, Agago District.

He was facing seven counts in the 5 Infantry Division Field Court Martial.

Ameny was charged with three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of abduction, and one count of absence without official leave, commonly referred to as AWOL.

Colonel Peter Musherere chaired the court, which handed down the sentence on Wednesday after a two-day hearing in Ngora East Village, Paimol sub-county, Agago district.

The court heard that on October 20, 2024, Private Ameny left his post at Pakondong Detach and went to Ngora East Village in search of his wife, Ogom Betty, whom he suspected of infidelity.

Armed and agitated, he killed three people and injured two more, including a one-year-old child.

One of the residents, Obita Richard, was kidnapped by him and forced to divulge the whereabouts of his wife and her alleged lover at gunpoint.

During the trial, Ameny pleaded guilty to all charges, citing frustration over his wife’s disappearance and the shs16.5 million loan he had given her to start a business.

Additionally, he stated that after several attempts to get assistance from her family and the police failed, he decided to handle things himself.

Lt Nekemiya Waiswa, the Prosecutor, emphasized the gravity of Ameny’s crimes, describing him as an adult with sound mind who committed premeditated acts that devastated families and communities.

Private Agaba Darius, the defense counsel, argued for leniency, citing Ameny’s previously clean record, his role as a breadwinner for his three children and siblings, and his remorseful cooperation during the trial.

Colonel David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, praised the community’s participation in the investigation and reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to justice and accountability.

He urged soldiers to settle personal disputes through proper channels and to avoid conflict with civilians.
