Nakasongola | President General (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasised the critical role of intelligence in military operations, emphasising its importance in informing strategic decisions and maintaining national security.
Intelligence, according to him, “is the eyes, ears, and nose of the army.” President Museveni stated that the army must know where it is going, what it will do there, and what is there.
He made the remarks on August 15 at the passing out of 298 Counter Terrorism Warriors Course Intake 7/2024 and 58 Special Operations Tactics Course Intake 1/2024.
Held in Migyera, Nakasongola district, the pass out took place at the School of Defence Intelligence and Security.
Museveni encouraged the graduates to reach their full potential in life while cautioning them against harmful habits such as promiscuity and alcoholism.
He thanked the instructors and the School of Defence Intelligence and Security for maintaining high standards, which are critical for battlefield success.
Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, thanked the President for his strategic leadership and commitment to improving the UPDF’s capabilities through ongoing training and professional development, allowing them to effectively address evolving security challenges.
She urged the soldiers to carry on the bravery and sacrifice of their forefathers, who selflessly served and protected the country over the years.
“You have earned this honour with hard work and you will retain it by living the core values of UPDF which are loyalty, patriotism, courage, discipline, and teamwork.”
The Commander Land Force, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, representing the Chief of Defence Forces, reminded the soldiers that the courses are just the beginning of their ongoing training and development.
He stressed the importance of discipline and warned them against reckless habits that could endanger their lives and careers.
Maj Gen James Birungi, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, told the soldiers that they are held to high standards and that they must perform their duties to the best of their abilities in order to meet the expectations placed on them.
Colonel James Muhumuza, Commandant of the School of Defence Intelligence and Security, stated that the training programs were designed to provide soldiers with the expertise needed to conduct specialised missions against terrorist threats and execute complex operations with precision.
“In modern times, terrorism remains a preferred method of creating violence and terror by most bad elements. This training is our humble contribution to fighting and completely defeating terrorism in Uganda and making this country a better place to live in,” said Col Muhumuza.
