Lira I Ambassador Dickson Ogwang-Okul received blessings from Born-Again Church leaders on Thursday, June 20, ahead of the November 2024 Won Nyaci election.
The religious leaders encouraged him to go ahead with the legal process of taking over Lango cultural leadership.
Ogwang, Uganda’s former Deputy Ambassador to the United States, is now the Head of Chancery at the Uganda Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan. He currently serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Lango Cultural Foundation.
On June 3, he received blessings and support from the outgoing Paramount Chief (Won Nyaci), Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii.
Mzee Odur called for peace and unity in that meeting, which was attended by clan leaders who are completely loyal to him as he prepares to retire in November.
It is also worth noting that an election was held in Akii Bua Stadium, Lira City, in March 2024, but it was deemed “illegal” by the pro-Yosam group, which claimed that it was “marred with illegalities and voter bribery.”
Ogwang is the clan leader of Pala-Ocol. He, a trained international lawyer, diplomat, peace and conflict resolution expert, stated that “in all kinds of leadership, one must rely on God, the giver of wisdom, for effective servants’ leadership that empowers leaders to do their delegated responsibilities with love.”
Bishop Dr. Tom Ibrahim Okello, chairperson of the Pentecostal Fellowship’s National Council of Elders, and his team received and prayed for Awitong Ogwang Okul.
The Bishop thanked him for embracing God and his commitment to the Church throughout his life and leadership.
The Bishop would promise to pray for Ambassador Ogwang and Lango so that the division in the leadership of the Lango Cultural Foundation, which had lasted more than ten years, would be resolved.
“I am requesting that Lango’s cultural leadership unite so that the ambition of peace and unity can be restored forever.”

Meanwhile, Bishop Joseph Omara of the National Fellowship of Born-Again Pentecostal Churches for Lango Province urged the Lango people to respect Lango’s Paramount Chief, Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii.
Bishop Omara urged Lango to honour Won Nyaci Odur’s wishes during his final period of leadership transition “because the Bible tells us that elders must be respected.”
He stated that when President Museveni took power in 1986, he had few supporters, particularly in Lango, but thanks to his consistent leadership centred on God’s love, his administration is now associated with excellent social, economic, and political transformation that is enjoyed by all, including those who initially opposed his vision.
He stated that without effective cultural leadership, society can easily collapse and degenerate regrettably.
“Ambassador Dickson Ogwang-Okul, I want to thank you for your initiative of seeking spiritual guidance from us, the spiritual leaders.
“We now encourage you to continue the process of taking over Lango. We shall keep praying for you knowing that if cultural leaders and religious leaders are not together, then the government can’t deliver services effectively.”
Awitong Ogwang pledged to be a beacon of peace and unity for Lango.
