Soroti City – July 12, 2022: Unknown thieves last week in the night stole two car batteries from a brand new Soroti city garbage collecting truck.
The truck with the registration number UBL 198W was donated to Soroti City by the Ministry of Local Government under the MATIP program to manage littering in the city.
The two batteries are estimated to be costing between shs2 to shs3 million. They were found missing when the driver came to start the car.
Juliet Ipagi is the deputy mayor who said last week that “they woke to a surprise this morning finding that the batteries were missing amidst the police protection”.
The inquisitive deputy mayor insisted that the police officers on duty that night could be having an idea of the whereabouts of the batteries.
Isaac Asaku is the city’s secretary of works who noted that the incident has affected the service delivery, especially garbage littering.
He added that the city is overwhelmed with garbage and offloading it from the business area has been challenging as they have been struggling due to a lack of a truck.
Asaku claimed that the people behind the theft may not be far from those that know the security situation in the city area.
This is the third time Soroti city has been robbed in the presence of a security guard.
The first was a theft of over 24,000 hand hoes the government supplied to the locals to boost productivity at a household level, followed by the theft of three computers in the finance department and now truck batteries.
Ambrose Ocen, the city clerk says he has been trying to follow up with the previous incidents with police but police have not given him any report.
Jonathan Ebwalu, MP Soroti City West has asked for the arrest of the police guarding the premise to help with investigations into the matter and reinstatement of other theft cases.
MP Ebwalu alleges that it seems there is convenience between some city officials, police, and thieves because in all the other theft cases there has been no single attempt of padlock break but items were taken.
Clement Okanya, the OC Station Soroti Central Police tells TND News action will be taken against the officers on duty that night. The officers on duty were arrested to aid with investigations
