The traders want the government to reduce the tax imposed on the manufacturers so that it “does not affect many people”.

Geofrey Obwana, a hardware dealer along Obote Avenue, said that the prices of building material are increasing every day: pipes (heavy duty) was at shs60,000 (now shs 75,000), (medium) was shs45,000 (now shs48,000), (new medium) was shs30,000 (now shs40,000).

He continued that the government should reduce the taxation so that consumers don’t suffer much.

Bosco Obwogi, another hardware dealer said that the prices of building material are increasing, adding that they are selling cement at shs32,000 to shs35,000, Iron bars at shs34,000 to shs40,000, Iron sheet (32 inch) at shs29,000 to shs35,000, respectively.

“The price of the fuel that went up and the lock down imposed by the government to reduce the spread of Covid 19 are the factors that are affecting the business,” he added.

Mama Yahweh of Lango Wa Hardware in the city told our reporter that the prices of cement and iron bars went high “due to the season”.

Racheal Ejang, a contractor based in Kampala said that the increase in the prices of building materials is affecting them because some of the bosses don’t pay them in time.
