Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, reports say, is preparing for the presidency.
Lira – March 8, 2022: Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has Tuesday announced his retirement from the military service – nearly three decades in uniform.
Muhoozi, one of President Yoweri Museveni’s children, until then, remains his father’s advisor on special operations and commander of the land forces, an arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
He also remains “as he’s” until the UPDF senior command accepts and clears his request.
“For now, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi is as active as before he made the announcement. He is not the final person,” a senior military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, Tuesday.
Reports say the 47-year-old is pushing to replace his father at the State House.
With past reports (rumors), now added with news of early retirement, it is a clear sign that his “Muhoozi Project” is ripening.
Some youth now adore him on social media, praising him as “our next president” of Uganda. The country will hold another general election in 2026.
What’s new, what’s controversial?
It’s worth noting that some politicians who lost in the 2021 elections, all belonging to the ruling (NRM) party, are demanding an amendment to the Constitution to allow Parliament to elect the president.
Calling themselves “Transformers Cadres Association(TCA)”, the group’s president tells TND News Muhoozi is their man.
“He is our man in the context that he is a Ugandan who cannot be deprived of his constitutional right to contest for the presidency,” Felix Adupa Ongwech, TCA president said.
“But he is not a member of Transformers,” Adupa quickly replies when asked whether Gen. Muhoozi is part of them.
The move by TCA to have a president elected by the parliament and district councils has met wider public criticisms. Handful supports it.
Their move has also received a negative welcome from the NRM Secretary-General, Richard Todwong who is not alone – according to reports from Plot 10.
Earlier, Muhoozi had this to say:
“After 28 years of service in my glorious military, the greatest military in the world, I am happy to announce my retirement. Me and my soldiers have achieved so much! I have only love and respect for all those great men and women that achieve greatness for Uganda every day.”
