The ambulances are part of MP Dr Samuel Opio Acuti’s pledge heading to the concluded 2021 general elections.
Kole – February 27, 2022: Voters in Kole North continue to jubilate after their Member of Parliament, Dr Samuel Opio Acuti delivered three new ambulances to them.
This was part of his pledge heading to the concluded 2021 general elections. The ambulances have been assigned to the three sub-counties of Alito, Aboke and Okwerodot all in Kole North Constituency.
Dr Samuel Opio Acuti tells TND News he used shs 200m that was given to each Member of Parliament for the purchase of their vehicles and topped up to shs 100m to buy the three ambulances.
“The move to purchase ambulances was driven by several cases of maternal deaths where pregnant women couldn’t make it in time due to lack of transport services in Kole North,” Dr Opio added.
According to him, it was further fueled by several road accidents where lives were lost due to delayed referrals as a result of lack of transport.
“On several occasions, I have had to use my vehicle to transport pregnant mothers to the health facilities. Lastly, I have had more than 247 funerals in the last 7 months at my constituency,” he said.
A number of these deaths, he told us, could have been avoided if emergency referral and evacuation services were accessible. “This initiative will go a long way in addressing this.”
The three ambulances registration numbers are UBK 578Z, UBK 061U and UBK 579 Z. They are fully equipped with oxygen cylinders, monitoring equipment for pressure, pulse rate and other vital signs and a foldable ambulance stretcher.
The ambulances are stationed at the health centres in each of the sub-counties and an ambulance management team to coordinate them has been set up.
Dr Opio Acuti hopes to further lobby for improvement in health infrastructure and better health services, revealing that his next priority is having a maternity ward in each of the HCIIIs.
The MP has recently been at the forefront of fighting drug theft in government health facilities where several persons were arrested.
The LC3 chairperson of Aboke sub-county Bony Munu Ocana said this is still the first time an MP is buying ambulances for each sub-county in his constituency.
Ocana pledged that the ambulance for his sub-county will serve its intended purpose, saying he will ensure that it is in good working condition.
