Oyam: Farmers’ maize and rice milling machines grow legs

Oyam 19 November 2020: Farmers’ groups in Oyam district are in tears after their milling machines got stolen. The affected farmers are from Abok and Ngai sub-counties in Oyam North.

TND News has been told that the milling machines were stolen from the groups’ stores early this year. 

The machines were donated by the Apac district farmer’s association in 2004, when Oyam was still a county under Apac district.

Mr Moro Patrick, the Ngai sub-county LC3 chairperson, confirmed the “high profile theft” to this digital publication.

“The milling machine was stolen early this year, and I was not yet in office,” Mr Moro who took over office after the resignation of former LC3 chairperson said.

He told TND News that the sub-county councillors raised the matter in council. “The former LC3 chairman denied responsibility and said no one is authorized to talk on what has happened except group members and their leaders,” the sub-county chairperson added.

He said the stolen machine “is worth millions of shillings”.

Report indicates that Apac district farmers’ association signed a contract (agreement) for 30 years with Apac district local government to support farmers’ group and the contract was signed when Oyam district wasn’t declared a district yet.
