Ugandan musician Bebe Cool has issued a strong warning to social media users, cautioning them against using online platforms to abuse, insult or attack other people.

The singer, who is known for his close association with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), said Uganda’s social media environment is expected to undergo major changes aimed at addressing what he described as increasing online misconduct.

Bebe Cool warned that people who use social media to attack others, spread harmful content or engage in personal insults should prepare for stricter measures in the future.

According to the musician, social media platforms should be used responsibly and as opportunities for communication, creativity and income generation rather than spaces for harassment and abuse.

“Stop abusing people on social media. Uganda’s social media is going to be cleaned by force, whether you want it or not, within eight months. You either earn from it or face the consequences,” Bebe Cool cautioned.

His remarks have sparked discussions among social media users, with some agreeing that online abuse has become a serious problem while others questioning what measures could be introduced.

Bebe Cool argued that the growth of social media has created opportunities for many Ugandans, especially young people who use platforms to promote businesses, entertainment and personal brands.

However, he said the same platforms have also been misused by individuals who hide behind anonymous accounts to attack others without considering the consequences.

The singer emphasized that freedom of expression should come with responsibility, saying people should understand that their online actions can affect others.

He encouraged social media users to focus on creating valuable content that can generate income instead of spending time insulting or targeting individuals.

Bebe Cool said those who use social media positively can benefit from the growing digital economy, while those who misuse the platforms risk facing consequences.

The warning comes at a time when social media continues to play a major role in Uganda’s public conversations, politics, entertainment and business.

Platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, X and Instagram have become important tools for communication, allowing Ugandans to share opinions and reach large audiences.

However, the rise of online criticism, personal attacks and cyber-related disputes has also raised concerns among leaders, public figures and ordinary users.

Bebe Cool’s comments have attracted attention because of his influence as a musician and his public political views.

The singer has previously spoken on issues affecting Uganda’s entertainment industry, youth behaviour and national development.

His latest remarks have renewed debate about how governments, technology companies and users should work together to create safer online spaces.

Supporters of stricter online regulations argue that action is needed to reduce cyberbullying, misinformation and harassment.

Others have called for a balance between protecting people from abuse and ensuring that citizens maintain their right to express opinions.

Bebe Cool maintained that social media users must adapt to changing times and understand that online platforms come with responsibilities.

He urged Ugandans who depend on social media for income to treat it professionally and avoid activities that could damage their reputation.

The musician’s warning has added to ongoing conversations about the future of social media regulation in Uganda and how online behaviour can be improved.

As digital platforms continue to grow, the debate over responsible use, freedom of expression and accountability online is expected to remain a major issue.
