At Lira RRH’s inaugural prayer breakfast, Bishop Acur urges teamwork

LiraThe Bishop Emeritus of Diocese of West Lango, Alfred Acur Okodi, has urged health workers and administrators to embrace teamwork and strive for excellence in service delivery.

He was speaking as the main celebrant on Wednesday June 17 during the inaugural prayer breakfast held at Lira Regional Referral Hospital parking yard.

Bishop Acur, who is also the Anglican community chaplain, commended the hospital director Dr Andrew Odur and staff for their dedication.

He, however, challenged them to work together more closely in addressing inefficiencies and improving patients’ care.

He emphasised that medical professionals are called by God to lead the restoration of health and should use their God-given abilities to positively influence patient outcomes.

Speaking to dozens of breakfast attendees, the Bishop stressed that no single individual can transform the hospital alone, but that success depends on the collective efforts of doctors, nurses, administrators, and religious leaders working in unity.

The General Secretary of Lango Religious Leaders Forum, Rev. Thomas Obong in his remarks, said no one is a hero alone. “….people must work to celebrate everyone and to accomplish the task that is before us.”

The acting director of the hospital Dr Andrew Odur, also spoke. “The idea of the prayer breakfast was initiated by the members of the top management as a way of not only thanking God for the strides the hospital has made, but also to reflect and dedicate the staff to God as we enter the new financial year 2026/27, so that they serve people.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, a hospital like this that has existed for more than 100years, has had several experiences like growth in the number of staff, improvement in infrastructure and a strengthened health system,” he added.

Dr Odur says the hospital is on the trajectory of becoming one of the best hospitals in the land, and encouraged the staff to work diligently in order to ensure the referral facility achieves the desired goal in line with ministry of health policies.

Despite the increase in the annual output of the hospital like more than 300,000 laboratory tests, more than 10,000 surgical operations performed and over 200 sessions of dialysis services monthly amongst others, he said we still need a more organised health work force.

“I was so happy to learn that we have been able to save three out of five very critically ill patients who would otherwise be declared dead have walked home alive and happy from our newly functionalised ICU.

“The message we wish that you continue to give to the public is that this hospital is on a trajectory to become the best in the country,” he noted.

The prayer breakfast which was held under the theme: “Delivering Quality Healthcare through Hardwork and Compassion,” was attended by staff and graced by religious leaders in Lango, under their umbrella body: Lango Religious Leaders Forum.
