Sentenced ULS president Ssemakadde issues vows

Weeks after he was sentenced to two years by Justice Ssekaana Musa for contempt of court, Uganda Law Society (ULS) president Isaac Ssemakadde has spoken through his vice.

In his statement full of vows, Ssemakadde who was elected five months ago in a “radical manner,” has vowed to appeal his sentence.

His Vice President, Asiimwe Anthony, in a statement dated February 20, wrote that despite facing political persecution and judicial harassment during his five months in office, Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Isaac Ssemakadde remains committed to restoring harmony between the bar and bench.

“He has asked me to assure you of his dedication to this cause. The bar and bench are interconnected and interdependent components of the administration of justice, as outlined in Chapter Eight of our Constitution,” the statement further reads.

“Lawyers and judges must work together to ensure justice is served, for everyone.”

Asiimwe stated that the recent 2-year sentence passed against our Radical New Bar President has created a crisis that could have been averted through open and honest discussions between the bar and bench.

“We urge the Chief Justice to meet with us without delay to address concerns and grievances and avoid further escalation.

All lawyers must recognize that the bar and bench are part of the same legal community, entrusted with the responsibility of promoting constitutional democracy.

“Respecting the paramountcy of Freedom of Expression is therefore crucial in establishing a clear line of communication to avoid future conflicts. “Ebigambo tebita (words don’t kill),” as one media programme proclaims.

The Judiciary, ULS said, must adopt a democratic and inclusive approach to internal management and bar-bench relations to maintain legitimacy.

“Let the Judiciary Top Management move away from divisive rhetoric and foster open dialogue. Judicial officers must avoid using the law as a weapon against the bar and its leaders. The Radical New Bar will continue to promote transparency, accountability, and democratic principles in the Judiciary.

“We will pursue appellate litigation to ensure historic elections are held to choose new leaders of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) who can work collaboratively with the bar and bench. Meetings and communication channels will also be established to prevent misunderstandings.”

Restoring harmony between the bar and bench requires effort and commitment from both sides, ULS leaders said.

“By rebuilding trust and respect, and strengthening institutional relationships, we can create a more effective and just legal system.”
