Kole NRM leaders want losers barred from main elections

Kole | The Kole National Resistance Movement District Executive Committee has urged the NRM Secretariat to disqualify all aspirants who will lose the primary elections.

Kole leaders argue that allowing them to compete against official party candidates will cause further confusion and division.

They now want the party secretariat to reconsider and pass a bylaw prohibiting anyone from running against the party’s flag bearers.

The appeal was made at a consultative meeting held on November 25, 2024, at the NRM office at Corner Molem in Kole district.

Party members expressed concerns while discussing Eng. Moses Oteng’s potential candidacy for the LC5 position in the upcoming general elections.

Serafin Odoc, the NRM District Administrative Secretary, emphasized the value of dialogue, citing party rules that require support for the designated flag bearer.

Odoc also stated that the NRM is still strong in Kole, and that recent by-elections in Dokolo, Oyam, and Kisoro will not deter their efforts because by-elections do not have the same significance as general elections.

He expressed confidence that many NRM MPs would be elected to Parliament across the country in the upcoming elections.

Betty Akello, the Kole District NRM Secretary and a representative of both Akalo town council and the sub-county to the district council, stated that if the higher authorities at the secretariat address the issues surrounding the primaries, the NRM could have a significant impact in the coming elections.

Akello added that the secretariat must implement a policy that prohibits candidates from running against the flag bearer, as failure to address this issue could result in continued losses for the NRM.

She warned that allowing independent candidates to run against the flag bearer would jeopardize the party’s electoral prospects.

George Odyek, the chairperson representing PWDs, stated that while NRM once had a strong presence across the country, its current challenges are due to financial constraints.

He emphasized the need for the NRM to hold a delegates’ conference to reassess certain regulations governing the conduct of candidates who did not win the primaries.

Odyek expressed admiration for his counterparts, claiming that the NRM remains strong and poised to achieve significant victories, beginning at the grassroots and progressing to higher levels.

Eng. Oteng Moses, who hopes to receive the party flag for the district chairmanship, stated his commitment to following all party regulations for candidates.

He stated that, while he did not succeed in the 2021 elections, he is now prepared to run and is confident of receiving a significant number of votes.
