Aloi secondary school strike ringleaders arrested

Alebtong | Security officials in Alebtong have decided to temporarily close Aloi Senior Secondary School.

This action was taken by the District Security Committee in response to a strike on November 20, 2024.

Aloi Secondary School is in Aloi town council, Alebtong district.

The school’s deputy head teacher, Agang Alfred, 48, reported the incident to police for proper management.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga region, confirmed that a team from the District Security Committee led by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner and the District Police Commander, promptly arrived at the scene around 9:30 pm.

They apprehended more than seven students identified as the strike’s ringleaders.

OKii Joshua (S2), Obote Apollo Milton (S2), Omedi Abel (S2), Elem Kizito (S1), Ogwang Kennedy (S2), Okeng Rafhael (S1), and Ogwang Brian (S2) were all arrested.

As investigations continue, all arrested individuals are currently detained at the Alebtong Central Police Station.

It is claimed that on the evening of November 20, 2024, after dinner, some students began to express dissatisfaction with the limited food available in the kitchen, resulting in disturbances and violent behavior, including stone throwing.

This unrest turned into a strike, causing damage to window panes, light bulbs, and other property, according to SP Okema.

On November 21, 2024, a security meeting was held at the school, and it was decided to arrest the ringleaders to help with the investigation.

“A case file has been registered at the Aloi police station. Preliminary reports indicate that students were complaining about the inadequate food supply, while some opposed the idea of sitting for the end-of-year promotional exams. Some students are exhibiting a lack of respect towards their new headteacher.”

According to SP Okema, certain teachers and board members may be opposing the current headteacher and encouraging students to act out.

On November 19, 2024, the current headteacher took over the position from the previous headteacher, and the district security team, led by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Alebtong and the District Police Commander, paid a visit to the school.

During this visit, both the student body and the teaching staff were addressed, and all students in attendance were registered.

According to police reports, this is the third instance of a student strike at this school.
