Uganda strengthens ties with Japan in defence cooporation

Kampala | Last month, Major General Jack Bakasumba, the Chief of Joint Staff, emphasized the critical need for collaborative efforts to combat terrorism and address African challenges. 

In order to address issues and promote leadership, Bakasumba emphasized the value of African nations coming together.

He made the call during a meeting with the Japanese Deputy Head of Mission and the Defence Attache to Uganda based in Nairobi at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs in Mbuya, Kampala.

Bakasumba reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to ensuring refugee safety, despite limited resources.

In keeping with Uganda’s commitment to helping vulnerable communities, he emphasized the free health care and education offered in government schools.

He praised Uganda’s strong bilateral relationship with Japan, emphasizing that Japan’s support for Uganda is not taken for granted.

Tomotaka Yoshimura, the Japanese Deputy Head of Mission, acknowledged Uganda’s critical role in regional stability and expressed Japan’s desire to contribute to Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force operations.

He praised Uganda’s positive policy of integrating refugees into their host communities, emphasizing Japan’s support for these policies as co-chair of the Global Refugees Forum.

Commander Keiko Kawashima, Japan’s Defence Attache to Uganda, stated that the Japanese government is willing to provide training opportunities, particularly in heavy equipment, to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
