Uganda has lost another prominent public figure in less than three days, following the death of Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, which shocked the country and the world.
Cheptegei died in a Kenyan hospital after his ex-boyfriend poured petrol on her and then set her on fire. According to a widely reported medical report, her body was burnt up to 75%.
She has received widespread acclaim, with reports circulating that the French government will name a stadium after her.
Another high-profile public figure and cabinet member has died, compounding the pain of that loss.
Dr. Gideon Mugisha, Sarah Mateke’s brother, announced her death. He said his sister suffered a heart attack early Saturday morning.
She was pronounced dead at Mengo Hospital shortly after being rushed there for treatment.
She was in the 11th Parliament as a representative for the women of Kisoro district until her death.
She also served as Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs – Defence.
Her colleague, the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, recalled their recent interactions.
