Lira – July 18, 2022: Uganda continues to pride itself in athletes many of whom have shone at the international level.
The country is proudest of Joshua Cheptegei who on Sunday night defended his 10000m title at the ongoing World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field, Oregon in the United States of America.
Cheptegei took gold with a final kick in the last leg of the fast-paced race; taking 27:27.43 to stay breaking the record he has set.
His closest challenger, Kenya’s Stanley Waithaka Mburu finished second to take the silver with a time of 27:27.90.
Cheptegei’s compatriot, Jacob Kiplimo came third with 27:27.93 in duration and settled for bronze.
Below is how two selected media outlets reported the ongoing and past events:
In 2019, Cheptegei won gold over the same distance during the 2019 World Championships held in Doha, Qatar, Kawowo Sports reports.
The same publication adds that he had earlier settled for silver during the 2017 edition in London, United Kingdom.
“Chepetegi is only the fourth man in history to win back-to-back titles.”
Daily Monitor
Yesterday, Cheptegei relied on able compatriots Stephen Kissa and Jacob Kiplimo who finely mashed the field like boiled Irish potatoes ready for a weaning baby to eat.

The perfect day for Uganda on the west coast was sealed as Kiplimo surged through from sixth place to secure a bronze medal in a time of 27:27.97 behind Kenyan Stanley Mburu.
“This is something special to me, this is now a very big achievement,” said the 21-year-old, who also won the 10000m bronze medal in Tokyo.
Kissa came 24th in 29:21.10 and despite crossing the finish line last, the marathon national record holder must be delighted with the results of his colleagues.
