“The lockdown has made a number of people vulnerable,” Arach Oyat Sharon, UPC Spokesperson.
Kampala – 25, June 2021: On 23, June 2021, Uganda People’s Congress addressed media in Kampala. According to UPC, she is concerned that there has been an increase in the number of medical personnel being infected with Covid-19 in the line of duty.
“This is a danger to the health sector, and this is an emergency for the health Ministry. When health workers are falling sick in large numbers such as 92 health workers as cited in Tororo this is worrying to the country,” UPC spokesperson, Arach Oyat, said.
As UPC, she added that “the events are happening while the backdrop provided by the citizen’s depicting their priority concerns sees medical staff denied improved remuneration and working conditions.”
“The lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for the medical personnel has contributed to the high numbers of infections. This does not only apply to medical workers, but also Ugandans with other diseases leading to increased self-medication which is turning into another emerging pandemic in its own sense due to fear of hospitals,” she adds.
“UPC therefore urges the government to put most or all of her efforts in the health sector to ensure that the battle is won. Medical workers should be well facilitated and ensure they been fully vaccinated.”
On corruption, UPC congratulated all the cabinet ministers who were recently sworn in and appreciate the outgoing cabinet for the work done in the service and development of this country.
Unfortunately, UPC says, “business is not as usual as we are in the battle field fighting Covid- 19 pandemic.”
“Many of the country men and women are in the lockdown as a measure to curb down the spread of the virus. This has left many of our citizenry vulnerable as they cannot be able to provide for their families.”
Covid-19 relief money
“As the Prime Minister Robina Nabanja noted that government will provide the vulnerable people with a cash hand-out to facilitate them through the lockdown period, however, UPC has noted with concern the criteria through which the government will use to identify the beneficiaries of this package by monitoring the status of their mobile money account transactions.”
“UPC opposes this move on grounds that the lockdown has made a number of people vulnerable, we therefore propose that whoever is affected by this lockdown should be considered as a beneficiary for the government hand-out.”
“It is our humble prayer that this money will not be swindled as it has been reported in the past in the various media outlets. UPC urges the Prime Minister to be more vigilant and ensure that all vulnerable people receive the intended government mobile money package.”
“The issue of sending money through mobile money accounts should be thoroughly looked into as there are people who may own phones, but are not registered in their names as well as those with totally no phones.”
“All these possibilities should be considered and the amount of money declared,” the opposition political party, working with ruling NRM government, demands, urging all Ugandans to continue adhering to the Ministry of Health’s SOPs.
