Kampala—1, September 2020: Politicians in Uganda with the regime provided bodyguards have been warned not to misuse the men in uniform.
Brig Gen Flavia Bwekwaso—Defence Spokesperson in her press statement dated 1, September 2020 wrote: “It has come to our notice that many members of Parliament across the political divide who were given military escorts for their personal security in the wake of armed criminality last year have started misusing these soldiers in the current political season.”
Her cautionary statement adds: “This is contrary to the reason they were assigned and is likely to involve them in compromising yet unnecessary and avoidable violence between the contending political groups.”
According to Brig Gen Bwekwaso, for this reason, the UPDF leadership directs that all its soldiers should not be misused and where this is found to happen, they will be promptly withdrawn.
“The contenders for political office should not involve and/or misuse these soldiers and policemen, who were assigned purely for a different and clear purpose of ensuring the personal security of the members of parliament.”
She further says this warning also applies to other contending for political office but are armed or have armed escorts.
Uganda heads to the general elections in 2021, which election will see a new president and MPs, including district leaders elected to serve for next five years.
