PLE results: Obongi RDC furious with district leaders

The RDC of Obongi district has expressed disappointment in the district leadership, citing insufficient efforts as the cause of the district’s poor PLE performance and the weak education sector.

His outrage stems from the release of the primary leaving examination (PLE) results last week. The results show a decline in performance over the previous years.

In 2024, only four Obongi district candidates achieved first grade, compared to seven in 2023.

RDC Samuel Hasaka Mpibaza added that it is unfortunate that the district only has four first-grade candidates in refugee hosting schools.

The RDC blamed leaders and department heads for failing to perform their duties.

“I am sorry to report that performance in the Obongi district has deteriorated even further. In 2023, we got seven first graders. In 2024, we got only four first grades and these are in refugees hosting areas that’s in Cinyi and Belo primary schools which is very unfortunate.”

“And the reason why we have bad performance is because of the bad technical leadership and politically people are not doing their work, no inspections, no monitoring,” furious Hasaka added.

Angala Patrick, the Obongi district education officer (DEO), stated that 80% of the candidates passed in the second division and only 0.8 percent passed in the first grade.

The DEO went on to say that because Obongi is a rural district, it has an impact on both teachers and candidates’ performance.

“The truth is, we only have four first grades, down from seven in 2023. Only 80% are in second grade.”

The above results, according to the DEO, indicate an improvement, adding, “We are yet to calculate from 1st to 4th to know how many are joining secondary school.”

“These young girls and boys are struggling in rural areas; the district does not provide coaching or motivation to teachers. But, if we give it, they can do better.”

Hasaka’s concerns are not unfounded; the Obongi district has struggled with poor performance for many years.

According to the local government performance assessment report, Obongi district has been among the worst performing districts since 2022, with the education sector being one of the main concerns.
