Dokolo | The NRM party structures in Dokolo district will hold no primary elections for a flag bearer – it’s now apparent.

Janet Adongo Elau will hold the yellow flag ahead of nominations and voting for a new district woman MP on March 21.

In 2021, she held the flag against FDC and UPC candidates for the same political seat. Unfortunately, now the late, Cecilia Atim Ogwal, beat all of them.

Cecilia died aged 77 on January 18, 2024, in India. She was laid to rest on January 27 in Alito, Kole district.

Two weeks ago, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Justice Simon Byabakama met stakeholders and hopefuls in Dokolo. He later released the road map for the by-election.

As days draw near, on Saturday, February 17, Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, the national mobilization director at NRM addressed party structures at Dokolo Catholic parish hall in Dokolo town council.

Seninde said they will back Elau, and appreciated the two women who stepped down. She told them to wait for the bigger general election in 2026.

Those who chose to step down because NRM is bigger than them are Auma Lillian And Ayugi Judith. Their colleagues are defiant!

NRM party has no objective against those who want to contest as an independent, Seninde said, but warned independent candidates not to disorganise voters of their candidate.

She also advised them never to allow the opposition to win the forthcoming by-election against their candidate.

Four other women have disagreed with the NRM party rules and said their candidatures will stay.

The four are the Dokolo district NRM chairperson Abang Beatrice Kia Molly, and Rebecca Arao who said the “NRM party is not bigger than her”.

“People’s interests are different, that’s why I can not allow to see Dokolo district moving in the darkness and keep quiet as a mother,” Arao said.

Dr Grace Anna Atine said the person holding the NRM flag, Elau, cannot compete well with other political parties.

“NRM remains my party although I can not give space to the opposition to take over this by-election like what happened last year in Oyam North.”

Irene Amongi also refused to step down. She told the media that it’s now the right time for the younger generation to take over leadership of this country, starting from the lower level up to the national level.
