Lira | A 30-year-old resident of Wigweng cell, Barogole ward in Lira City West Division was on Monday 12 discovered dead in an aluminium workshop.

Francis Bonny Okello, as reported by the LC1 chairperson, Patrick Ojok, was sleeping with two other friends in a workshop.

Ojok told tndNews that Okello was a drunkard, alleging that on Sunday 11, he was seen drinking on an empty stomach.

The LC1 chairperson added that the deceased came home early on Sunday while drunk. Later in the wee hours of Monday 12, he was heard by neighbours making noise.

“Two of the friends that were sleeping in the same room heard him snoring in a weird way and immediately came out to seek help from the neighbours. But upon checking on him later, he was discovered dead,” Ojok revealed.

He further appealed to idle youths who spend on drinking to change their mindset and live a responsible and respectful life.

“Once our youths get to the urban centres, they opt to stay in corridors, drinking from morning to sunset without minding food. This has to change, youths need to live a responsible and respectful life,” he emphasised.

A fellow roommate who preferred anonymity said Okello spent the whole Sunday drinking on an empty stomach and refused all the food they brought for him.

He also said that Okello was looking so normal and didn’t have any complaints of health-related issues.

“Okello was looking fine and indeed, he entered early to catch a nap without having any complaints,” he said.

Another friend of the deceased, only identified as Opio, said in an interview that Okello, now late, went to the workshop for an early nap after having some drinks but kept rejecting food he was offered, citing a lack of appetite.

“I even brought him some food to eat but he kept saying that he has no appetite for beans. He was instead asking for meat which was not there at the moment,” he added.

Meanwhile, the territorial Police in Lira City West Division have now opened up a Death Enquiry File regarding his sudden death.

Preliminary findings indicate that the unfortunate incident happened on February 12 at unknown hours.

According to the Police statement, it is alleged that on February 11, 2024, at around 8:30 pm, the deceased was at his home while drunk, but on February 12, 2024, at around 3:00 am, the neighbours claimed the deceased was heard making noise.

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the incident noting that a case file of DEF 05/2023 has been opened to support investigations.

SP Okema appealed to anyone who has information that can support the investigation to share it with the Police so that the cause of death can be established.
