Obongi | The Obongi district LC5 chairperson, Haj Abibu Buga Khemis has removed his vice chairperson Paul Drami Gia from his position.

Speaking during an extraordinary meeting, the district chairperson maintained that he had decided to drop the vice chairperson based on several reasons ranging from abuse of office, failure to report to him when delegated, and failing to do his work as the leader of council business.

“From the effect of today, I have revoked the powers of Drami who was the vice chairperson of Obongi district, I have all the reasons to do that by the powers entrusted to me by the local government Act and the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda.

The chairperson continued, “Hon Drami who is the vice is the person to follow the resolutions of the council, he is to ensure that the council meetings are held timely and ensure that the resolutions of the council are implemented by the technical officers. I have therefore dropped him and I am going to scrutinise and see the next person to take over that office.”

The Resident District Commissioner of Obongi, Samuel Hassaka Mpimbaza remarked that the actions of the district chairperson are right and intended to clean the image of the district.

“This has been a long-standing problem that has now been put to rest. This district is dying and it is dying because of not taking action, so now that we have seen the chairperson taking action, I think the district that has been in a coma, on a life support machine, there is hope that it is being revived.”

Moses Power, a resident of Palorinya sub-county welcomed the decision by the district chairperson, saying they do feel the impact of the vice chairperson as he has been absconding council meetings.

“Mr. Drami Paul is being influenced by people who do not wish well for the people of Palorinya and Obongi district at large by not doing his work as expected,” Power said.

Paul Drami, who represents the people of Palorinya, was not in attendance at the meeting. Efforts to reach him for comments on his known phone numbers could not yield any fruits.

Drami was appointed as the vice chairperson in 2021. His removal means that he will now remain as a councillor for the same sub-county.
