Election of Won Nyaci postponed

Lira I The election of the new paramount chief (Won Nyaci) of Lango has been postponed.

Earlier scheduled for January 31, 2024, the cultural event was rescheduled following, among other things, the death of the late Cecilia Atim Ogwal.

The former Dokolo district woman MP died last week on Thursday from India. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 27 in Alito, Kole district.

Her death, the organisers of the cultural event (electoral commission) say has disorganized their preparation.

The postponement, the commission says will offer ample time to mourn the death of our daughter Cecilia Atim Ogwal who has been instrumental in the development of Lango.

Chairperson of the electoral commission Tom Otim said they have pushed the election to March 1, 2024.

Otim said the postponement will also give enough time for clan leaders to mobilize resources and the funds needed to support the election, while also giving time to other clans to submit their voters’ list.

Additionally, some clans have been urged to use this period to address their grievances before the election. In Lango, some clans have two clan leaders.

Last year, the council of owitong approved a budget estimate of shs40m, presented by the electoral commission to support them in the forthcoming election.

Each of the 149 recognised clans is supposed to contribute shs 100,000 for Won Nyaci’s election.
