Ongu Tom, 60, shot dead on Boxing Day in Lira

Lira | On December 26, murder and attempted murder took place in Lira district leading to loss of life.

The crime took place at around 21:00 hours, according to Police. The Giso of Itek Sub-county, Oyena Emma reported that an unknown armed assailant had attacked one Ongu Tom and family members at his home.

It’s alleged that on December 26, 2023, at around 2100hours, an unknown armed assailant stormed the home of one Ongu Tom 60 years old peasant farmer, and resident of Agerowanga village, Ajia parish Itek Sub-county in Lira district, he shot him dead in the chest, SP Jimmy Okema said.

According to the deceased’s wife Apili Esther, 60, disclosed that the armed assailant found them watching films outside as he emerged from the bush and started firing at them.

Quickly, family members started running inside the house, and the assailant shot Ongu dead and injured three children identified as Okot Denis, 49, Apili Salume, 13, and Ongu Ambrose, 10.

Okema said Police officers from Lira City East Division, a flying squad, Canine section commanded by DPC Lira City East Division visited the scene.

“The dead body was picked and conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary pending postmortem. The injured persons were rushed to Lira Regional Hospital emergency department for treatment.”

Some cartridges were recovered at the compound and picked for ballistic analysis, statements were recorded from some witnesses, the North Kyoga Region PRO added.

“…we appeal to volunteers to support police with information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrator such that he appears before court for justice to prevail.”
