Govt ready to deploy 1,901 medical interns

Lira I The Ministry of Health has confirmed it is ready to deploy 1,901 medical interns at a budget of shs1m each per month.

In a statement dated July 27, 2023, Dr Henry Mwebesa, Director General of Health Services says the interns are expected to report to their various training centers by 3 August 2023.

He says the available budget is at a net monthly allowance of shs1m per intern to facilitate accommodation and feeding.

“The Ministry of Health has received clearance to deploy medical interns to the 58 internship centers across the country.

“Subsequently, Ministry of Health has released a deployment list for the interns under revised terms as guided by the government. The delayed deployment was occasioned by factors beyond the control of the Ministry of Health.

“The respective hospital directors will issue the interns with deployment letters and organise for their induction,” Dr Mwebesa said.

Medical interns and senior health workers have often protested over lack of pay, allowances and poor working conditions.

In May 2023, the Ministry of Health was tasked to find funds to cater for the needs of medical interns and senior house officers after nationwide protests were staged.

During their protest, they are arrested and taken into custody before getting released.
