Obongi, May 24, 2023: Police of Obongi district on Tuesday evening rescued two suspects from mob action in Obongi town council.
The suspects are alleged to have stolen a motorcycle with registration number UFG 815D from Palemo village, Adropi sub-county, Adjumani district.
They are reportedly the killers of Muzamil Tabu, 30, a resident of Minia village, Adjuamani town council.
Tabu was clobbered to death on Sunday and his body was recovered on Tuesday morning from Palemor village, Adropi sub-county Adjumani district, and his motorcycle was also taken by his killers.
The resident district commissioner (RDC) of Obongi Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka said the suspects Patrick Obulejo from Forua village Adjumani town council, Adjumani district and Godfrey Anyaja were found selling the motorcycle and they had concealed the registration number plate in their bag.
“We have recovered the motorcycle and I have informed OC CID of Moyo about it, the suspects are under guard at Obongi Health Centre iv get treatment,” Hashaka confirmed to TND News
Hashaka appeals to the public to avoid mob justice, saying it is illegal and can lead to the death of innocent people or can tamper with investigations, including arresting other suspects.
He also warned idlers and suspected thieves to desist from the acts of stealing people’s property as the public is desperate and frustrated.
RDC added that the investigating agencies should quickly conclude investigations because the public decides to kill suspects due to the delay in justice and the judiciary should give harsh punishment to culprits.
The local council three (LC3) chairperson of Obongi town council Ismail Gift said the town council has been heavily infiltrated with suspected hardcore criminals from the neighbouring districts.
“We know of some dangerous groups called Jajamin in and Fire eaters all located in Arua, we are working with security teams to weed them out of this place,” Gift revealed.
The chairman appealed to the communities and the business communities in the town to be security conscious and report any incident to the police for proper management.
“We are sensitizing the community to always be on the alert as a new town the criminals are always targeting them,” he added.
Last year on September 26, 2022, thieves broke into 12 shops stealing goods and cash estimated at millions.
In 2017, suspected thieves also intoxicated the watchmen working at Obongi SACCO offices with some chemicals, the vigilantes beat one of them to death
