Museveni mourns Keith Muhakanizi, “I was aware of his illness”

Kampala, April 14, 2023: The Permanent Secretary in the Office of Prime Minister is dead. Keith Muhakanizi died aged 64 in Milan, Italy, according to a statement from the government.

He also worked as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and as Secretary to the Treasury. His death was announced by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on Thursday.

“I am shocked to hear about the death of PS. Keith Muhakanizi. I was aware of his illness but it was being managed, he came to see me before this round of treatment, it is sad that he didn’t make it. I spoke to his wife in Milan and she told me what happened. Condolences to her, the family and the people of Uganda. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Summary of what he will be remembered for

Muhakanizi was both a passionate Development and Macro- Economist, and a Public Sector Management Specialist with thirty-eight years of experience in Government.

In the 1990s, he played a central role in the formulation and implementation of economic reforms that restored the macroeconomic stability of Uganda’s economy.

Muhakanizi guided both the technical and policy development work in the preparation of successive National Development Plans (NDP) now at the third level (NDP III).

He did policy reforms and enhanced public financial management to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of public resource use to promote enhanced domestic resource mobilization.
