Different leaders have been conveying their Easter messages to Ugandans with hopes that they may offer comfort to those in hardship.
Like Jesus Christ who went through many hardships and later accepted to die for humanity, religious leaders in Uganda have been asked to if possible, accept to follow Christ’s footsteps.
In her Easter message, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Nyanjura Doreen said, “As we celebrate this most solemn season of the Christian calendar, the death, and resurrection of Christ. May we go into deeper reflection not only about our personal lives but also about our country!”
She added that “a heavy yoke weighs down ordinary citizens, the yoke of corruption, the yoke of oppression, and the yoke of injustice”.
“It is in this vein that I appeal to our religious leaders, please walk in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ, speak truth to power, and pay the price if you must.”
The sea is rough, she added. “We want to hear your voice ordering the stormy seas to quiet down. Remember that Jesus did not order the frightened disciples; he ordered the sea that was threatening them. Quite often, you have taken on blaming the victims.”
“The blood of the innocent victims flows in this country, ‘drones’ are finishing our people, and many are languishing in the despot’s jails without charge.”

“I will refer you to Isaiah 1:15 says, “When you lift your hands in prayer I will not look. Though you offer many prayers I will not listen for your hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims.”
“Verse 17 goes on to say, learn to do good, seek justice, help the oppressed, defend the cause of the orphans, fight for the rights of the widow.”
“Ugandans count on you church leaders to use the occasion of Easter to fight for the rights of the downtrodden and to be the voice of the oppressed.”
I wish all of you happy Easter celebrations.
