“Expired sodas in several supermarkets,” says Police investigator

A Ugandan top police investigator has issued an “irritating disclosure” on sodas being sold in supermarkets.

Charles Twiine is the former Spokesperson of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Uganda Police.

Now in charge of the Parliament Police Investigations Division, Twiine wrote on his Twitter handle: “I have noticed with irritation a lot of expired Cocacola zero @Cocacolauganda & Pepsi Max @PepsiUganda in several supermarkets that I have formally sampled, most of them reading BB/Nov/22.”

He added: “Such an act is not only a sign of negligence but bordering attempted murder @UNBSug @PoliceUg.”

According to Euro-monitor International, soft drinks in Uganda witnessed a slight rebound in 2021 as COVID-19 restrictions began to be lifted and lifestyles made a slow return to normality.

Further, information available with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) as of October 2019 indicated that the soda and bottled water sector had 256 manufacturers of which only 46 were on the tax register.

Today, sodas are sold in millions of shops (dukas), grocery shops, including supermarkets across the country.

Is drinking expired soda dangerous?

“Carbonated soft drinks or sodas are not perishable, and are safe past the date stamped on the container. Eventually flavor and carbonation will decrease. For best quality, consume unopened diet sodas within 3 months after the date expires; regular sodas within 9 months.” Source: Internet.
