Arsenal beats Crystal Palace in season opener

Lira [London] – August 6 2022: Two goals were enough to see Arsenal claim three points against hardworking Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday night as Premier League season 2022/2023 resumes.

Arsenal and Arteta knew the importance of winning their first game away and it was going to be a hard task against a team managed by former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.

The North London club lost their three first premier league games last season to Brighton, Chelsea and Manchester City.  They would later finish fifth.

After spending cash on five additional signings in the current summer [transfer window], Arsenal‘s debutants:  William Saliba, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko performed well. Saliba, signed in 2019 and loaned more than once to France was voted Man of the Match.

His play was pivotal to Arsenal registering a clean sheet.

Zinchenko, signed from Manchester City assisted Gabriel Martinelli’s goal in the 20 minutes with a strong header inside the box.

Mikel Arteta later hailed his Arsenal side for showing plenty of grit against Palace.

‘I’m very pleased with a clean sheet and three points against really tough opponents,’ Arteta said as quoted by the Daily Mail.

‘We had tough periods during the match. We showed resilience to get through them, and I am really positive,” he added.

The second goal was an own goal from Marc Guehi after he headed inside the net a shot from Bukayo Saka in the 80 minutes.

Palace boss Patrick Vieira was left to regret missed opportunities at the end.

‘I don’t know if 2-0 is well deserved for Arsenal,’ he said.

‘The two goals we conceded were poor. And then when we had good moments, the momentum, we created two really good chances to get back into the game and we didn’t take them… (that) cost us the game.’
