Instant government intervention is needed, according to UPC.
Kampala, April 6, 2022: Dozens of people are reported to have been killed due to the fragile situation in Karamoja sub-region.
Various reports also indicate properties are getting destroyed, and the community are fleeing for safety.
Last month, the UPDF said the situation in Karamoja was “under control”. As per the current situation, it seems “something is overwhelmed”.
The safety of people and their animals remains a serious problem and today UPC wants instant intervention.
“All along, UPC has been keenly following socio-economic challenges in Karamoja sub-region due to cattle rustlers, which have registered a loss of lives and cattle!” the party’s spokesperson, Orach Sharon said.
She added that it is quite not clear to come to terms with the reality of what has happened to our people in Karamoja.
“There have been insecurity, loss of human life and property as a result of cattle rustling. This is a very much unfortunate situation and needs real, instant Government intervention!”
According to her, this cattle rustling equally flourishes with the illegal acquisition of guns.
The Government ought to constantly liaise with our neighbours and put in place joint watertight measures that should include regular patrols and having a special force trained to deal with cattle rustling along the borderline, she told the press in Kampala, Wednesday.
“UPC urges the Government to carry out more research that can lead to a diversified economy within the Karamoja sub-region to reduce on over-reliance of a pastoral economy, as is the case with Ankole whose pastoral economy is moving hand in hand with growing of both food and cash crops as well as constructing more valley dams to ensure there are enough water supplies for animals, which will minimise on death in case of drought.”
I do see like there is no problems with what the government are doing in Karamojong sub region.
Coz those people don’t have ears, how many time have the government been warning them to hand over their guns to the government?. But to no avail, they have been killing and robing the near by tribes like Acholis but the UPC didn’t talked about.
