Lira, March 29, 2022: During a press briefing at the Downtown ghetto home located at Cukaatat in Lira City West, the members of the Lango Ghetto Youth Association have requested the government and the (new) speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among to fulfil some of the pledges left unfulfilled by the late former speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah.

The ghetto youth met with the late speaker on December 22, 2020, at Uganda Technical College (UTC Lira) during his visit to meet the ghetto youth who had defected from the National Unity Platform to the National Resistance Movement party.

In that meeting, they say Jacob made several pledges with hopes of transforming their livelihoods and becoming better people in the community.

Martin Odur, the Chairperson Lango Ghetto Association said they last met the late former speaker on December 22, 2020, when he came to welcome them from the different ghetto and political groups.

“From there he made several pledges to us as ways of transforming our livelihoods. Among them was bringing in projects that could help transform our lives to become better people,” Odur narrated.

The late speaker, the said also promised them cadre ship training through his office provision, and also promised to coordinate with the government to ensure that all the ghetto boys willing to study resume school.

Odur said they will not get tired of seeking help from the government through the different leadership and those who have replaced Oulanyah to ensure that such pledges are fulfilled.

“We got so depressed upon receiving the information about the demise of the late Oulanyah but since we know we have several otherleadersp in his position, we call upon them to continue with the initiative that was earlier on honoured by the late Oulanyah and ensure that they are fulfilled,” he said.

The ghetto youth described the late speaker as a father who used to love them so much and called them his children.

“Oulanyah was a person who comes close to dealing with all classes of people; he was a down to earth leader. He was a mentor who taught us how to be strong youth and citizens who have hope fora  better life,” Odur concluded.

Nono Steven Odongo, aka “Code Deyo” is the vice-chairperson of the ghetto youth who also doubles as the prime minister of the same association, said the late Oulanyah used to support them a lot but now they are worried about how life will be like.

“We always go through a lot of challenges in terms of access to services like health care, denial of justice and isolation from the public yet we contribute a lot towards the development of this country no matter how we are.”

“For example, street kids collect caveras, garbages that means a lot although we would be doing it indirectly,” Nono added.

“We are going to miss the late former speaker because he welcomed us as his children. When he came to Lira, he talked to us despite of his speakership position; he brought us together amidst our party affiliations.”

“Therefore, if he had not passed away, there were a lot of support and benefits we would achieve from him,” He concluded.

Emanuel Okello, 15-year-oldold street child said he was hoping to go back to school following the visit of former speaker who encouraged the young ones like him.

On December, 22, 2020 during his visit Jacob Oulanyah gave shs5million to the Lango ghetto youth association who had defected from the National Unity Platform to the National Resistance Movement party.

Each member was supposed to receive shs25,000 many were given shs10,000.
