Kotido – February 23, 2022: Cooperation and Development (C&D) in partnership with the Kotido district local government has declared Kogiligili village an open defecation free area.
C&D is an NGO implementing the Water, Health and Sanitation (WASH) project in schools and communities with funding from KOICA. It has been offering pieces of training, rehabilitation of boreholes and rain harvest system, among others.
Also, in this project, C&D together with Kotido district have been sensitizing communities on stopping open defecation and improving sanitation.
Tuesday, a team from C&D and Kotido district declared Kogiligili village in Loloogoka parish, Kotido sub-county “an open defecation free zone” after members of the community built latrines and stopped open defecation.
The village has a total of 120 households with a population of 1,000 people. 30 households have fully functional latrines while 50 households share latrines; 30 households still have incomplete latrines, according to available statistics.
Brian Kotol, the coordinator of the WASH program said, “I am excited about the response from the community.”
He added that they are yet to identify the next village where they will roll out the same activity.
Samuel Kanyange, the DISO of Kotido who was representing the RDC asked the community of Kogiligili to desist from traditional taboos that discourage people from using latrines.
“It is a safe way of preventing diseases that are caused by poor hygiene,” he added.
