Lethal road: LPG notifies government of planned peaceful demonstration

Last year in November, LPG Chairperson Judith Alyek told UNRA ED, Allen Kagina that Lango is being ‘treated unfairly’.


Oyam – January 19, 2022: Lango Parliamentary Group (LPG) has officially notified the government of her intentions to peacefully demonstrate at the weekend, Saturday, January 22.

The planned demo is expected to send a signal to the government that the state of Lira-Kamdini road is dire.

In her letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola dated January 18, 2022, the LPG Chairperson Judith Alyek wrote: “This is to inform you that Lango Parliamentary Group (LPG) which consist of Mmembers of Parliemnt from Lango sub-region will be holding a peaceful demonstration on the Saturday 22nd of January 2022.”

The same letter was copied to the Minister of Works and transport, all MPs from Lango, RPC North Kyoga and all DPCs of Oyam, Kole and Lira districts.

“The demonstration shall take place on the Lira-Kamdini road from both Lira and Kamdini side. We have taken up this approach after exhausting all options with UNRA, Ministry of Works and Transport and the Prime Minister.”

According to MP Alyek, commitments were made in Parliament by the Prime Minister to commence major rehabilitation works latest by October 2021 on August 26 2021.

“This has not materialized with no tangible response from UNRA to date on a timeline to commence full reconstruction on the road.”

Seven traders died on the spot when their Fuso lorry overturned near Bororboro on their way to Lira City from Ajuri market in Alebtong district. Nineteen were admitted to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, and on Tuesday, two were pronounced dead.

Whereas the Ajuri to Lira fatal road crash was the driver’s fault, according to the Police, several deaths due to road crash on Lira-Kamdini road is due to the current terrible situation. Key communications signs are missing and full of potholes.
