Northern Uganda Youth MP, Okot H. Boniface aims to promote sports talents across the country.
Lira 4 , October 2021: Northern Uganda Youth MP, Boniface Okot has said Monday he has a raft of proposals for sports reform he will table before Parliament.
Among the proposals that Okot is envisaging is for a talent identification committee to be formed in every district across the country.
According to the youth MP, the committee shall be under the docket of the district community development officer for scouting and nurturing talents in various sports disciplines at grassroot level.
Okot says his dream is to transform sports in Uganda so that it becomes a lucrative venture and a well paying job for the young population in Uganda.
He was Monday speaking at Bar primary school at a function where Greater Barr Football Club unveiled new players they recently signed.
“We are all gifted with different talents and skills and we should be able to support such talents,” Okot told cheerful players of Greater Barr FC.
He alluded to Lionel Messi of Pari St Germain (PSG) who earns about Uganda shilling 3bn per week as a footballer, David Obua who played in Scotland for Hearts FC and earned lucratively and George Weah who won the presidency in Liberia because people massively voted for him out of love for him as a footballer.
Greater Barr FC currently is playing in the the 5th Division and on Monday the club ushered in new players it hopes will bolster its squad.
The newly signed players include Hamis Karugavu from Karadali FC Nairobi, Akio Daniel signed from UPF, Dan Odyek who played as a number eight at Kyambogo University and Sam Omara, formerly with Gulu University.
The club has so far played 24 matches winning 23 of them and drew one. It remains unbeaten according to Timothy Ojok, the club’s PRO.
Greater Bar FC patron, Rev Canon Nelson Ogali while addressing MP Okot, said the club lacks boots and uniforms among other challenges to which Okot said he would avail sets of uniform for the club within a week.
Okot further contributed shillings 500,000 towards the welfare of the players and the club.
He warned the youth to shun alcohol, sexual immorality and to have discipline if they are to thrive in their game.
Okot also emphasized physical fitness for the players, saying it boost body immunity and also a healthy way of living.
The team plays their next games against Nile FC from Kampala, Kalongo and Kangai FC in Dokolo.
