Zombo – 21, August 2021: Zombo district has registered more than 5000 reported cases of teenage pregnancies within 17 months during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Collins Pileri, the Zombo district probation officer disclosed this sad statistics.

“This is a very serious indication of negligence by parents and partly the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown where schools were closed and children returned home,” he adds.

She further noted that the increase in teenage pregnancies reported are mainly teenagers aged 14 years to 17 years.

James Oruna Oyullu, the Zombo district LC5 chairperson revealed that from January 2020 to December 2020, the district registered more than 4090 cases of teenage pregnancies and from January 2021 to May 2021, they have registered more than 1800 cases of teen pregnancies.

Oyullu added that these cases are majorly due to negligence by parents who don’t take care of these teenagers and more so the Covid-19 lockdown.

“We are sensitizing the communities about the increasing cases of teenage pregnancies and urging parents not to sit on any case of this kind but rather report to the higher authorities,” added Oyullu.

Teenage pregnancies have highly increased in Uganda during the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that have since been imposed which led to closure of learning institutions, making children redundant at home.
