Corruption affecting fights against Covid – says UPC

Kampala – 21, July 2021: Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) party continues to share with the ruling government her concerns regarding fights against Covid-19 in the country.

UPC has issued dozens of advises and recommendations to NRM government since Covid-19 pandemic broke in the country.

On Wednesday 21, July 2021, the Kampala road-based opposition party announced her strong frustration towards Covid-19 current lockdown and vaccines [mis]use. UPC described the latter as “corruption”.

“As we come closer to the end of the 42 days lockdown, UPC would like to appreciate the people of Uganda for being patient and adhering to the presidential directives and following SOPs to control the spread of Corona Virus,” Arach Oyat Sharon, party spokesperson said.

“UPC re-emphasizes its earlier statement that the lockdown can never be a lasting solution to pandemic, but it can only reduce on the spread of the virus and gives us an opportunity as country to prepare and handle the virus. At this time, we expected all our health facilities to be ready with all the necessary equipment for both the patients and health workers,” she adds.

According to UPC, the government in this lockdown, should have launched and carried out mass testing to identify all positive cases and manage them accordingly as well as procuring enough vaccines to be able to vaccinate the general population of this country.

“It is unfortunate that up to now, the government has not utilized well the lockdown to do the mass testing and to vaccinate even half of the targeted population; we are still receiving cases of medical workers getting infected and dying due to limited PPEs,” frustrated UPC said.

Earlier this week, “the Daily Monitor reported that the Ministry of Health gave vaccines of over 2000 doses to an individual to vaccinate his people. This gives a very bad impression to the public, and it is classified as ‘corruption’ even in such a pandemic. Must one donate huge sums of money to government before they acquire vaccines?”

As per UPC, all this is happening at the expense of Ugandans that have been locked in their homes in this alarming economic situation. “UPC therefore calls upon government to stop taking the lives of Ugandans for granted and get them vaccinated as soon as possible and get people back to work.”
