America’s Fred Hutch donates PPEs worth shs100m to Uganda Cancer Institute

The Annals of Global Health findings of 2018 revealed that in Uganda, 32,000 new cancer cases and 21,000 deaths occurred.

Kampala – 15, July 2021: Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has been supported with medical equipments.

In recent months, cancer patients at the Institute reported they were not being ‘checked’ by doctors due to lack of protective gears.

With Covid-19 pandemic overwhelming government and all efforts put on it, UCI, like other health facilities, suffered in terms of getting enough support from government (Ministry of Health).

Thursday, the UCI announced good news:

“We received PPE materials from our collaborators @fredhutch worth UGX 100m to enable proper research. Within this consignment 5,000 COVID-19 test kits were also received. A big thanks to @fredhutch,” UCI said on Twitter.

Fred Hutch is a USA-based organization with headquarters in Seattle. It is pushing cancer and disease research forward.

“Because every disease is another step toward better, longer lives.”

According to the Ministry of Health, UCI offers “super specialized services in areas of cancer treatment, research and prevention.”

The Ministry, in 2018 revealed the country was having only 20 oncologists while the “demand for these experts has grown in large numbers due to the steady growth of cancer malady in the population with an annual load of more than 60,000 new cases in Uganda alone.”

In 2018, cancer was the second leading cause of death globally, with 18m new cases and 9.6 deaths.

By 2030, it is projected that approximately 26m new cancer cases and 17m cancer deaths per year will be recorded.

The Annals of Global Health findings of 2018 revealed that in Uganda, 32,000 new cancer cases and 21,000 deaths occurred.

The same finding revealed that over 56,238 people were living with cancer in Uganda by 2018.

Globocan Cancer Statistics Report of 2018 on Uganda identified top seven cancers. They are: cancer of the cervix, prostate, NHL, liver, KS, esophagus and breast.

Meanwhile, World Health Organization estimates that 30-50% of all cancers are avoidable by preventing or reducing exposure to cancer risk factors.
