UPC cannot work with Museveni and NRM government

“UPC is not a family, clan or regional party but a national political party with clear mission and objectives to run the affairs of Uganda.”

Oyam – 5, June 2021: Your Excellency, a few years back you have repeatedly sounded your purported working relationship with UPC party.

The most recent one is on 24, May 2021, when the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament were elected. That day, you spoke flamboyantly that you have been working with the opposition parties, UPC, and DP. Since I am not privy to what happens in DP, I wish to respond to your repeated outbursts on UPC party.

First, UPC is aware of your clandestine political deals with Jimmy Akena and his wife, Betty Amongi, who are members of the Obote’s family hailing from Lango. But it should strongly be known to you that the political relationship with Obote’s family is far from being related or working with UPC as a political party.

I hope this should sound more realistic and clear.

Mr. President, the political disagreement between UPC and NRA/M are based on grave fundamental issues that a mere friendship with Obote’s family members can not write it away. You may recall that UPC cooperation with other political formations is historical, and it stretches far back from the time of independence.

UPC agreed with Kabaka Yekka (KY) party with a clear agenda of sharing power and it was this alliance between, UPC and KY (UPC- KY) Alliance that gave birth to the first independence government in 1962 with Dr. Apollo Milton Obote of UPC as Executive Prime Minister and Sir. Edward Mutesa of Kabaka Yekka as President of Uganda.

What followed later is for another day, but the most important thing to note is that UPC opted for a formal alliance with KY with fewer legislators in Parliament compared to DP with a bigger number in the house of Parliament.

Therefore, if your agenda with UPC was genuine and in good faith, you would leave alone NUP, FDC and form a formal and public alliance with UPC on agreed terms of engagement not with the pretence of hiding around Obote’s son- and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Akena and his wife Betty Amongi to undermine UPC normal operations.

This is dishonesty and an act of betrayal to a national party founded on an ideological base with a known policy and governance history.

I may also remind you that UPC party runs its affairs using the Constitution, Party Organs and Membership. UPC, therefore, cannot accept and allow you to continue confusing the public and its membership with your personal relationship and pretence with Obote’s family to mean working with UPC party.

UPC is not a family, clan or regional party but a national political party with clear mission and objectives to run the affairs of Uganda.

I know you may wish to make UPC appear a military movement like (NRA/M-O) whom you own and steer. UPC, to the contrary, is a political party built on a social democratic ideology where members join through conviction not coercion/forceful conscription as it is the case in NRA-M Organization. I must also inform you again that UPC party is managed through party constitution, defined organs and their functions.

Since you renewed your friendship with the Obote’s family, UPC party has never sat, discussed and agreed to work or associate with your political maneuvers. It is the reason, why, since you aided Jimmy Akena with security and money to overthrew Olara Otunnu in 2015, UPC party members including myself went to court to challenge that imposed leadership and the party has since maintained its legitimate leadership through the party’s constitution from Dr. Olara Otunnu to Joseph Bossa (RIP) and now Peter Mukidi Walubiri as party President.

Attempts by Akena to forcefully and illegally take over leadership were equally thwarted by the Courts of Law from High Court of Yassin Nyanzi in 2015 and Court of Appeal presided over by three Justices of the Court of Appeal that you appointed.

This narrative should inform you about the events in UPC and to implore you to honourably top any further pretence to justify your illegal dealing with some members of UPC party.

The party leadership shall not hesitate to expose your illegal and sinister mission to undermine UPC party operations and your continued illegal and fraudulent dealings with Hon. Jimmy Akena, his wife and a few of their misguided followers who are bent to receive left outs from you in the name of UPC party.

UPC insists that there is no formal political engagement with you and NRM government.

UPC is very conscious about your deliberate hidden motives to destroy the UPC from within and cause annihilation of this grand party as you once vowed “to kill UPC party”.

The assumption that UPC is a family project and by getting closure to Obote’s family members makes the party lost is a mistaken belief.

In writing this, Mr. President, UPC is very conscious about your old sentimental hate of Obote and Lango, no wonder, your advances into Obote’s family is highly a suspect of attempts to destroy the legacy of the great man whose charisma brought independence and made Uganda one of the best economies in East Africa.

On the same note, his love for humanity allowed Rwandan refugees to settle peacefully in Uganda, making Uganda one of the best destination and most hospitable nation in the World. These presidency makes UPC weary of dealing with you on issues of governance because your 35 years of rule totally represents a different mode of governance.

I hope after reading this piece, you will appreciate that UPC is not yet ready and willing to work with your corrupt regime unless you take positive measurable nationalistic strides that are good for the betterment of the common man of Uganda.

UPC reiterates its earlier position to engage and corporate with genuine citizens and political/social formations that are seriously opposed to misrule and bad governance, with the sole aim of bringing to an end the nearly four decades of misrule and wastage of national opportunities by your government.

For God and My Country
