How do we get out of this socio-economic and political quagmire?

Oyam – 5, June 2021: Fellow Ugandans, the country is caught up in a new mood. Just recently there was a historical fist-fight for the position of Speaker of Parliament.

Now, there is the unusual delay in the appointment of a new Cabinet and Covid-19 has taken a new toll on the lives of people; the scary shooting of a 4Star General Katumba Wamala and the anxiety over another lockdown all putting the nation to a new mood.

These new episodes have overshadowed the economic difficulties arising from corruption and money politics. Put aside the heavy debt burden, increased militarism and abuse in governance.

All these developments put together define a crisis. I know soon they will slow down and the country shall quietly get back on road to continue with a long five-year journey to 2026.

The question we must ask ourselves individually and possibly collectively is: how do we get out of this socio-economic and political quagmire?

Would blaming it on the perpetrators who don’t care and feel the pinch save us? I don’t think so. I think it is a waste of time.

Taking up the matter head on and putting our house in order is the right path to follow. Blame game takes you back. Don’t hate me neither hate them but hate the issues.

Hate deters; love builds. Revenge hurts, but remorse heals. Uganda is one country with one people, tribal, religious, political and class differences.

Your enemies are not the tormentors you already know, but the hidden killer unknown to you.

Take time, reflect, and begin the journey.

It’s a long journey, but it is a journey worth it. Late President Nelson Mandela once wrote “Long walk to freedom” to liberate yourself and more so the nation. It is not a short distance. It is a long walk! The rest will join you later. Begin the journey now!
