FoG’s health strategy key to HIV/AIDS prevention in Lango

“Behavioral change, making choices and an informed decision in the prevention of HIV/AIDS; adventure unlimited versus behavioral change, HIV/AIDS prevention strategies like voluntary-medical-safe-male-circumcision is 60% reducing the risk of HIV infections,” FoG’s Executive Director, Mr Tommy Okada tells TND News.

Oyam—30, March 2021: Through PEPFAR/USAID funding, Friends of Goodwill (FoG) has been able to reach and provide health facilities to thousands of communities in Oyam and Apac districts.

With her project of “Strengthening HIV/AIDS Prevention, Education and Care for HIV Positive, Young People living with HIV/AIDS” in some of the renowned “hotspots” in Kamdini and Atura in Kamdini and Aber Sub-counties respectively, people and (affected persons) are being given guidance and counseling, health care education and prevention for those that are still living without the virus.

TND News also observes that there is a continuous follow up and more health assistance is being provided by the trained peer educators and peer-to-peer approach of HIV/AIDS awareness creation.

Reaching out to the communities with preventive measures and positive living skills where communities are given avenues to ask relevant questions and they are carefully and confidentially answered to their satisfaction. In addition, condoms are being distributed to the sexually active people (youth) as a preventive mechanism and also for family planning.

Also other areas youths are being trained on include; role of Post Exposure Prophylaxis–PEP within 48 hours, abstinence for age below 24, being faithful to one partner when all knows the blood status, use of condom correctly and consistently for those unfaithful partners, for discordant couples, they are being trained to embrace positive living and seeking doctors’ advice.

On top of strengthening HIV/AIDS Prevention, Education and Care for HIV-Positive, FoG is running additional project entitled “Raising Families”. Junior farming demonstrations for raising families’ project are being given to households in Ibuje Sub-county, Apac district, northern Uganda where vulnerable women and their families are being taught, seeds distributed, watering cans among other services are also being offered.

According to Tommy Okada, Value Base Life Skills [VBLS] has seen youths being taught by community development officer [CDO] of Aber sub-county on life skills topics. He tells TND News’ Stephen Omara that more projects focusing on health and economic empowerment are to be introduced in coming years.

Women beneficiaries welcomed the development and promised to give it “a maximum commitment”.
