Lira – 8 January 2021: More than 20 girls in Lira, Dokolo, Kole, Alebtong and Agago districts in Acholi and Lango subregions have started earnings from skills gained under Trust A Girl in Africa [TAGA].
The Non Governmental Organization operates in Lango and Acholi.
The girls aged 15 to 20 were selected and recommended by their area local council one (LC1) chairpersons and village health team (VHT) based on the vulnerability.
They benefited from different skills that include tailoring and garment cutting, sanitary pads production, advocacy and sensitization on danger of child marriages.
However, the girls were able to produce more than one hundred thousand sanitary pads [1,000] and twenty thousand face- masks.
These have been distributed to primary schools and residents in the districts of Lango and Acholi, TAGA says.
Apart from making sanitary pads, the girls are also able to make counter books, clothes after a five month training.
Among schools that have started benefiting includes Okol primary school in Agago, Omoro East primary Alebtong, St. Andrew Alebtong, Lwala primary school and Obutu primary school in Kole.
Monica Ayar, a senior two dropout from Dokolo said she is glad to have benefited from the training although she is left with only one month to be awarded a certificate next month.
“I will be able to make pads for herself and other girls in need,” she said.
Topista Akello from Lira district says she is excited of the skill she got. “It has enabled me to sell and i can earn income to meet other needs as a girl.”

Another beneficiary from Agago also said she is happy with the project that will not only provide them with skills but equipments and materials for them to start up business.
Moses Ousi who is the Project Officer, said their target is to enroll more one thousand [1000] girls in the period of five years [5yrs] as the project period indicates.
Ousi adds that the project aims at creating employment opportunities for girls who will in future become women, increasing the source of income and livelihood to girl child.
