Kampala—26, December 2020: On Boxing Day, Uganda’s election body—the electoral commission (EC) issued a statement saying it had banned physical campaigns from the Capital City, Kampala; other cities and districts in Uganda.
The development was released by Mr Paul Bukenya, the EC’s acting spokesperson via Twitter. “The EC has suspended meetings in districts/cities categorised by the Ministry of Health as having a high spread of Covid-19. From 26/12/2020, no campaign meetings will be held in Mbarara, Kabarole, Luwero, Kasese, Masaka, Wakiso, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo, Kampala and Tororo.”
The ban has attracted wider debates and condemnation from some Ugandans. FDC District Woman MP candidate for Kampala, Dr Stella Nyanzi asked Mr Bukenya: “1. Is this suspension indefinite? 2. Does this include door-to-door meetings? 3. Are drivers also suspended? 4. Are public media panel sessions also suspended in these areas? 5. Shall we just show up to the polling station on voting day?
Some replied to her saying: “Zoom is not suspended, TV advertisement, ok, newspaper ads, ok.”

“In preparation for 2021 general elections, the EC starts packing ballot papers and declaration of results forms for Presidential and Parliamentary elections today, Sat 26/12/2020, at EC Warehouse in Banda, K’la. Candidates’ agents and media have been invited to observe,” Bukenya said.
