“We call upon all citizens of Uganda to regulate and minimize their movements or if possible, let them stay where they are during this festive season..”
Kampala—16, December 2020: Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) party continues to warn Ugandans that the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) is deadly and real.
The Kampala road-based opposition political party announced this warning on Wednesday during its weekly press briefing.
“In our press statement of 9th December 2020, the party was very much concerned on the worsening situation of Covid-19 pandemic in Uganda with a high increase in the number of cases and deaths, which is now at 28,168 and 225 respectively,” UPC says.
The Peoples Congress added that mid last week, the Covid-19 cases were slightly over 23,000 and 207 deaths, adding in just one week, Uganda has registered about 5,000 cases and over 15 deaths. This is worrying and devastating!
“Uganda Peoples Congress has been keenly following this surge and realized that there is a relaxation in observing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that prevents one from acquiring and spreading Covid-19, by the public. UPC as a party with a great interest in the welfare of the people, wants to remind the public that Covid-19 is real and kills!”
The party further says “we are in a delicate period of elections and festive season that may encourage the spread of Covid-19”. UPC therefore calls upon the public to adhere to SOPs purposely for the good of their health. The party does not want to see the lives of you, Ugandans being taken by a virus that can be stopped and avoided. So please, wear your mask, sanitize and distance socially!
Meanwhile, Ugandan doctors have asked government to ‘impose a complete lockdown’ during this festive season. The new lockdown, they say, will prevent people from the cities and towns going to villages to infect the villagers (their loved ones).
The government is yet to respond on their request.
In its Wednesday media briefing, UPC quoted New Vision’s article of 16th December 2020, on page 4, “the Medics have called for total lockdown during the festive season.”
But, UPC says she disagrees with “this position!” “The lockdown in the first place that left people with deep scars of but not limited to financial loss, was to let the country prepare for the pandemic as well as finding ways of how the public can protect themselves and prevent the spread of Covid-19. Now that we have the SOPs in place, let us ensure the implementation and focus on getting the vaccine!”
“However, we call upon all citizens of Uganda to regulate and minimize their movements or if possible, let them stay where they are during this festive season and reach out to their beloved families through various telecommunication networks,” Muzeyi Faizo, Head of Media and Communications at UPC says.
He added: “UPC wants to appreciate all flag bearers and members for continuously delivering the party’s good message to the electorates that will see them elected as leaders in various political positions. The party encourages them to continue with the same spirit and redouble their efforts while observing SOPs.”
