Uganda Decides: 2021POLLS I Foreign Funding
By James William Mugeni
United States of America—4, December 2020: Ugandans across the divide are supporting Bobi Wine’s presidency, and it is because he has managed to appeal to all of us across the world. Ugandans in their thousands are seeing what is going on in our country and the actions of government for 35 years.
Many of us have given birth to the children government is calling hooligans. The hooligans have become many in numbers and have a stake in the country. We have seen thousands of Ugandans take odd jobs overseas; in the Arab world. We have thousands of Ugandans in Britain, we have thousands of Ugandans in USA, and we have thousands of Ugandans protesting on the streets of cities in the world chanting “Museveni must go.” This Museveni must go is the loudest cry of Ugandans who have been disenfranchised in their own country.
Covid-19 has exposed Museveni, and he cannot hide behind this pandemic anymore. When you under value people’s time and again, you should not expect them to appreciate risks. What was the reason for recruiting local defense units (LDUs) for Covid-19? I am deployed in the frontline in the Covid-19 effort in the most affected continent of the world, but I have not seen tear gas and bullets used for Covid-19 SOPS enforcement. All I have seen are health workers.
Nursing schools are even offering scholarships and recruiting for the Covid-19 efforts. Other than putting measures in place to address Covid-19, the government of Uganda thought they would manipulate figures, get funded and divert the money as usual to the military and support the regime’s elections. The country is now between a wall and a rock.
Uganda has often preferred the military in responding to epidemics and now we have a pandemic whose response was mishandled despite getting a lot of foreign and private individual funding. It is time to deploy the true fighters of Covid-19; the health workers; unfortunately the funds bought tear gas, bullets, guns for a virus that needs sanitizing, social distance, masks, and ICU beds. Where are the hospitals to respond to an upsurge?
Recently, I saw testing centers that confirm lack of preparedness. By now every district and regional hospitals should be testing and managing Covid-19 since every district and region will be affected.
The strategy of killing people to stop Covid-19 has not helped instead it has just charged the populations. There is a need to reverse the actions of the military that has destroyed all institutions. Statistics show security forces are more dangerous than Covid-19 in Uganda.
If Covid-19 hits Uganda properly, it is going to expose Uganda to the funding world. Funds were used to buy guns as you can see it from streets. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the rest of the world cannot have citizens get killed under their SOPs instead of holding the government of Uganda accountable for funding that should have put in place hospitals and trained health workers to respond to Covid-19 than the military. Ours is not a response for Covid-19, because I am yet to see any country that has responded to this pandemic with the military except Uganda.
Over 20 billion worth of foreign aid poured into Uganda over the years has done nothing extraordinary for tax payers other than building the army. Money supposed to improve the well-being of Ugandans has only created a population managed with AK47s all through.
These elections are showing to the whole world that Museveni does not want the world to see after only investing in the army. This army is also trapped knee deep in the Covid-19 saga. Covid-19 found Uganda already having a standoff with Rwanda, which this has temporarily been controlled by the pandemic.
Museveni who used to warn neighboring countries about their refugees accumulating into Uganda have no clue that Uganda has amassed her own people as refugees across the world. He is now in a desperate attempt at trying to accuse the Western world and playing a moral card. There are no homosexuals or gay people supporting Bobi Wine.
The calls of “Museveni must go” across the world are by Ugandans and Ugandans outside Uganda. Ugandans who are tired of seeing destitution in their beloved country. You cannot be in America and not dream of a Uganda that resembles America. You cannot be in UK and not dream of a Uganda that resembles a UK.
We see what money does and we see what leadership does. The government of Uganda thinks sending maids in the Middle East deprives them of dreaming to go back to their country. Most maids in the Middle East are Ugandan with graduate degrees. The 76-year-old man campaigning to secure the future of Ugandans for another 5-year term; completely wrote off Ugandans in the diaspora albeit, thinks we are incapable of asserting our interest, cannot mobilize ourselves, and in fact, considers most of us to be foreigners while he willingly relies on our monthly remittances to support his operational budget.
Museveni knows his influence in our Uganda North American Association is waning and we are doing this because we are tired of being turned into destitute even in USA with the bribes he extends to our leadership. We are determined to fix our country.
“Ugandans lives matter” and as taxpayers wherever we are, we demand that countries like USA, UK and many others should account to their tax payers why they are spending money to oppress the citizens of Uganda .
