Kamdini—1, December 2020: In October 2020, the electoral commission (EC) announced 14 January 2021 as a date to elect Members of Parliament and President.
Ahead of 2021 general elections, nominated candidates for both parliamentary and presidential positions are busy appealing for votes from their constituents—for MPs and countrywide campaigns for presidential candidates.
In Oyam South, Oyam district, it’s the same. Both incumbent MP, also the Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Minister, Betty Amongi Akena (UPC), Queen Grace Amolo (Independent), Benard Awuko (Independent), Ishaa Otto Amiza (Independent), Odongo Willy (Independent) and Patrick Obong (NRM) are all busy campaigning for votes.
Betty Amongi was elected Oyam County South MP in 2011. He defeated Ishaa Otto Amiza, who won a by-election in 2007 after the death of the then MP, Okullu Epak.
Whereas some say Minister Amongi might ‘sail through’ come 14 January 2021, there seems to be a divided opinion on that assumption, with Obong’s supporters saying “time has come to change leadership” of Oyam South.
Like his supporters, Patrick Obong—the NRM flag bearer says “it’s time and I have never lost a battle”.
Speaking to this publication recently, Obong stated, “It’s true some of my supporters are being lured with money and others being threatened by the incumbent’s camp.”
“I have never lost a battle,” he stressed.
In August 2019, Obong said, “we need leaders who add value to the people and the area they lead; leaders who work for the benefit of others and not just for their own personal gain”.
“Leaders who inspire and motivate, not intimidate and manipulate; who live with people to know their problems in order to solve them and who follow a moral compass that points in the right directions regardless of the trends,” he added, then.
