Frequent power outage injuring Omoro businesses

Omoro—22 November 2020: With the majority of businesses in urban centres depending on power (electricity) for light, production, among others, the business sect in Omoro town council are not happy with the constant power blackout in the area.

Early this month (November), there have been power shortages in the area, hindering business growth, and many of them (traders) say they are not making profits due to outage.

The affected businesses are welding workshops, barbershop (salons), secretarial bureaus, milling machines, among others.

Mr Sam Okello, a salon operator at Opit Upper in Omoro town council says, “We are not making any money this month due to frequent power outage and our business will soon collapse if the problem continues.”

Mr Komakech Richard who’s the chairperson Omoro town council business Communities told TND News that they have been raising their concerns to UMEME Gulu office over the matter, adding that “but up to now the problem is not yet sorted”.

He added that for a month now power outage has seen a high increase in numbers of thefts, with thieves taking advantage of darkness to break into business shops.

Mr Okella Kwoo Walter Lukwia, the Omoro town council LC3 chairperson said soon, security personnel will start patrolling town center at night to protect peoples and their property.

However, Mr Dicken Omara who owns a welding workshop at Opit Upper said their materials are getting lost from the workshop and they are incurring loses courtesy of a power outage.

He urged the authorities of Omoro town council to deploy security personnel at night to protect their property and businesses.

Omoro town council has over 210 businesses operating in the town centre and they are mainly shops (groceries), bar, salon, welding workshops, garage, among others.
